After reading and learning thoroughly about the different past tenses, I realized how important it is for us teachers to fully understand their usages, applications, and differences. I have to admit that while completing the task sheet, I somehow felt confused about the differences between Past Perfect and Present Perfect, etc. I had to remind myself as to when each certain tense should be used and how each is constructed. This is an important reminder for TEFL teachers like me to make sure that we have mastered the functions of every tense in order to explain them simply and clearly even to low-level students. We might take minor details for granted (such as the differences in usage, structure, and sample sentences) but we must make sure that we are prepared to respond to the students in case they encounter difficulties in studying each tense themselves. We have to remind ourselves that there are a total of 12 tenses that they need to learn, so it would do them a favor if we could teach and explain every tense in a manner that is easy for them to understand. There is no other way we could do this than knowing the subject matter by heart ourselves. In coming before the students, preparation is always key.
