This Unit provides assistance with course development using the Common European Framework as a basis. Students are categorised within a five level scale from Starter through to Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate after a needs analysis is conducted with students. This assists the teacher in placing the student in the most appropriate level with a set of questions starting off simply, then progressing further in difficulty. Syllabuses can be created with particular attention to different purposes such as the Structural Syllabus (grammar complexity); Functional-Notional Syllabus (communication); Learner-Led Syllabus (student input); Situational Syllabus (situational needs). Limiting factors such as resources, environment, time, cultural issues, student needs and the employer can all contribute to how the course will be run or developed. Determining the appropriate test type for each age and level of student is also important and needs to be factored into the course. Placing the student in the correct level initially is important for their learning and development and provides them with the best opportunity for them to succeed and pass assessments, enabling them to progress.
