There are many different ways to evaluate the abilities of students, it just depends on what is the trait to be measured,i.e. fluency, comprehension, etc. However, in the first half of this unit, the focus was on interval testing; placement(at the start of a semester), progress( given throughout the semester), practice( also throughout the semester, but similar to a quiz). A good teacher would have a combination of testing methods, using these, a balance(in a 2 month semester) could be; after the first 2 weeks of the first month, assign a practice test, then at the end, a progress test, and the same thing for the next month. I feel that tests should be equally weighed, and that at the end of the day, they are just a type of evaluation, and are not the absolute measurement of what students language ability is. The second half the unit talked about external exams(TOEFL,TOEIC,Cambridge). External exams like these, must be extensive, because they are to ensure a student is prepared to live and/or work successfully in another country. Living/working in another country can be strenuous enough, and so there must be system of evaluation to make sure a person is capable of communicating fairly smoothly in daily life.
