Unit 18 covers the last section of grammar in the English language that you will need to know when in front of an ESL classroom. The most important topics covered in this unit are modal auxiliary verbs and passive voice. Modal verbs consist of a set amount of verbs that are used to address obligation, possibility, permission, ability, and advice. Each modal auxiliary verb can be used in one or more of these situations, making them easily identifiable. In a given situation, there may be more than one modal auxiliary verb that can be used, however one will be more correct than the others. For example, \"She might have gone to school\" versus \"She must have gone to school\" only slightly vary in possibility, however \"must\" suggests a higher level of possibility. Passive voice simply addresses the focus of the sentence. In active voice, the focus is on the agent, however in passive voice the focus switches over to the subject. Unit 18 also briefly addressed the three types of phrasal verbs intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs that include one or two participles, the three types simply deal with the formation of the sentence when using phrasal verbs.
