For teachers, I find the study of phonology very useful. Also, for advanced students this can help them to better trouble shoot problems on their own they are incurring with pronunciation or understanding spoken English. It is particularly helpful for those that want to do autodidactic studies, which at some point all students need to do in order to actually advance in English beyond intermediate studies. I wonder how helpful studying phonology and phonetics is for early learners and lowerlevel learners. My personal preference is for more exposure to whole language through extensive reading in particular when there is audio to accompany the reading materials and by extensive listening. Being read to or reading along with audio is a much more effective way to teach proper spelling than teaching kids phonetics in my experience. It is faster too. No need to worry too much about irregularities which English is full of. This is part of the basis of the Comprehensible Input Theory and subsequent studies. Ultimately, I think this is a great realm of study for theoreticians, but not necessary or if anything, an impediment for students looking to just use the language in a pragmatic manner at work, the home or school.
