This unit is about different teaching methods and an overview of the main method used with TEFL, ESA (Engage, Study, Activate). There are different methods of teaching such as The Silent Way, Suggestopaedia, The Lexical Approach. One of the most effective is the ESA, put forward by Jeremy Harmer. The first stage, Engage, is where the teacher gets the students interested and involved in the lesson. Some examples can include music, videos, showing pictures, stories, etc. The second stage is Study, where the students will focus on the language and information. Examples would include practice and study a single sound or word, tests, practice verb tenses,etc. The final stage is the Activate stage, where the students are encouraged to use all the knowledge they know and learned in the lesson. Examples would include role play, debates, communication games, etc. Every lesson should start with the Engage stage and end witht the Activate stage, but doesn't have to be straight arrow (in order). In can be mixed up a bit, like the Boomerange lesson, where there is a second Activate stage after studying. It can be boring for the students to always go in the same straight arrow way, so its a good idea to mix it up sometimes.
