A textbook is a useful heuristic tool that functions as a way to structure lessons and explicitly show learning objectives appropriate for a beginner, intermediate, or advanced class, and when choosing a textbook for a course a teacher should consider consider aspects like price, availability, methodology, relevance to topic, design, skills, or difficulty. Like a lesson plan, a text book is a flexible guide that can be adapted and supplemented to fit the students' needs and in order to play to the strengths of the teacher and class. Advantages of a textbook that it provides a variety of activities and textual sources matched to a certain level of English learner, meaning it is a created material specifically for use in a classroom. While it provides variety, a disadvantage is that it is not considered an authentic learning material, which is usually something created for and by people within the culture being studied, for example a magazine, a newspaper, a book, article, or media text written in English. These types of materials can be more engaging, and more satisfying to study, for students because of their authenticity, but also more challenging as they generally contain more unfamiliar language and grammar.
