This unit explained that reading and listening are receptive skills while speaking and writing are productive skills. All four skills are of equal importance. Reading and listening skills bring their own set of challenges to the teaching of language. With reading students are less likely to confront the same number of problems as with listening, especially if a teacher takes the time to pre-teach new or challenging vocabulary and chooses a text appropriate to the level of the student. This is because students have the ability to read and re-read a text as many times as possible in order to understand it. A student can pause and figure out what a new word means based on the context of the surrounding words. With listening, although a teacher can also pre-teach new or challenging vocabulary, the listening and understanding of the language must occur quickly if not immediately because once a word has been spoken unless you are listening to a tape or video it can not be replayed. In real life when two people are having a conversation the flow of language is continuous so a listener might struggle more to understand what the conversation is about if the topic or language used is not one the listener is familiar with.
