Unit 12 discusses the two productive skills in ESL learning: writing and speaking. Speaking activities focus on either accuracy (correct grammar, pronunciation, usage) or fluency (ease of language use, allows for creative exploration of language). The Unit makes the argument that writing is one of the most difficult skills to teach in the classroom since there is often not enough class time to accommodate for writing activities. However, writing is no more or less important than any of the other skills, and thus should be given attention in ESL instruction. Writing activities mainly focus on spelling, punctuation, and, if necessary, penmanship.
