This unit covered coursebooks and lesson materials. I learned that there are positive and negative things about using a coursebook in an ESL setting. Books can provide the teacher with a pre-established syllabus for the semester furnished with level appropriate language and activities, as well as research-based teaching techniques. Sometimes coursebooks are outdated and do not motivate students the way a newer version might. In other situations, a teacher may be given no materials and would need to generate the curriculum on their own. In short, the text outlined that using a coursebook is a compromise and adjustments are frequently called for.
