I read an article awhile back about a study that seem to indicate that teaching for any of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing promotes learning in students. However, the study went further by looking at combining skills in the learning process (They spoke of multiple inputs into the cognitive system.) to find this more effective for retention and speed of acquiring proficiency. Essentially, for language acquisition, Unit 11 is concurring with that study. Toward the end of providing multiple inputs into the students' cognitive process, the ESA style of lesson planning moves through multiple skills at a fairly quick pace.
