In this unit I learned about the characteristics that make up a good teacher as well as those that are ideal to have in a learner. Some of characteristics of a good teacher have to do with personality and how the teacher carries themselves, whereas others have to do with classroom management skills and developing relationships with students. A teacher takes on many roles while teaching; manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource/facilitator, model, and observer. The type of role expected of a teacher is dependent on the lesson and what the goal is that we want students to achieve. For example, if I wanted my students to be working amongst themselves and be independent in an activity, I would take on more of a \"facilitator\" role, so that I can be there if students need me but not be constantly spoon-feeding them information. Some attributes of a good learner are: a willingness to listen to the language, a willingness to ask questions, and a desire to learn. However, depending on the age of the student that may not be the case. Adult learners are usually more interested in learning the language because they have a concrete goal and can actively decide to take a class, whereas a young learner may not be as engaged because their parents signed them up. Motivation such as traveling, career prospects, love of languages, etc can be really helpful in aiding a students' willingness to learn. Their life and learning experience will shape the way in which they enter the classroom and start learning. I believe that this is important to keep in mind as well as the cultural experience that the students coming into the classroom will have had, which will most likely be different from mine. Finally, I learned about the different language levels from beginner to advanced, how those definitions can be somewhat variable, but how the Common European Framework has established the 6 levels ranging from A1-C2.
