Course books are a very emotive issue for many teachers. Some teachers believe that they should be used often while others despise them. Teachers have the choice of creating their own materials as a supplement for the course book or replace sections that are not suitable for the class. For many students, creating materials by the Teacher tend to be more fun and interesting than the course book. The materials used can be divided in two groups: authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are things that can be heard or read such as programs, magazine, poems, news film on video etc. These materials are real and more interesting and motivating. Students gain confidence and understanding esp. if these materials are geared to the interest of a particular group of students. Created materials are designed to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Artistic teachers use their ability for material production while others rely on pictures cut out from magazine, or stick people etc. Common created materials include crosswords, word search puzzles, etc. Course Books consist of a set of material: student book, workbook, cassettes, Teacher?s book. The advantages of using a course book is that students will be testing it. It provides a syllabus which is graded to a level suitable for the students. The materials in the course book will have been tried and tested before publication. On the other hand, course books does not always fit the specific needs and interest of all the class members. It can make the teacher lazy, and stop them from been creative. Instead of using a course book, the teacher can decide to omit certain lessons from the course book. Instead of omitting unsuitable material, the teacher may choose to replace with similar. At times teachers might want to add extra material to the course book as a supplement. Finally, the teacher can use the same basic materials but in his or her own way and style.
