UNIT 4 FOCUSES ON PRESENT TENSE. LIKE PAST AND FUTURE TENSE, PAST TENSE HAS GOT 4 FURTHER TIMES: SIMPLE, CONTINUOUS, PRESENT PERFECT AND PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS. THE FIRST CONSIDERATION WE CAN DO IS THAT TEACHING VERB TENSES COULD BE A QUITE HARD WORK IF OUR CLASSROOM IS COMPOSED BY ASIAN OR SLOVENIAN STUDENTS WHO HAVE AN EASIER VERB STRUCTURE. USAGE OF EACH OF THE 4 MENTIONED PRESENT TENSE DEPENDS OF ACTION. IF WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE A ROUTINE, AN HABIT, A STATE OF A SITUATION OR FACTS, WE HAVE TO USE PRESENT SIMPLE, EVEN WHEN WE ARE TELLING A PRESENT STORY, OR FOR NEWSPAPER HEADLINE. ONE OF THE MOST COMMON ERRORS FOR STUDENTS IL THE CORRECT FORM OF THE 3RD SINGULAR PERSON ABOVE ALL IN NEGATIVE AND QUESTION FORM. IF WE REFER TO A CONTINUOUS AND PROGRESSIVE ACTION, WE HAVE TO USE THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE WHICH UNDERLINE AN ACTION IN PROGRESSION. WE ALSO USE THE CONTINUOUS TENSE TO MARK THE FREQUENCY OF AN ACTION OR SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY IN A ROUTINE ACTION. THE CONTINUOUS FORM IS COMPOSED BY THE SUBJECT + AUXILIARY VERB BE + VERB IN ITS ING FORM.IT IS IMPORTANT TO LET OUR STUDENTS WELL UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS FOR EXAMPLE BY TELLING THEM A STORY WHERE WE USE BOTH THE TENSES AND LET THEM ACTIVATE WITH MIME GAMES. THE PRESENT PERFECT AND THE PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS RELATE PASTE WITH THE PRESENT, SO WE REFER TO ACTIONS THAT START IN THE PAST. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE 2 LAST TENSES IS THAT THE PRESENT PERFECT REFERS TO PAST EXPERIENCED WITHOUT ANY DETAIL ABOUT ITS CONCLUSION OR WHEN AN ACTION STARTED IN THE PAST HAS ALREADY FINISHED AND WHEN WE ARE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING HAPPENED IN THE PAST BUT WITH PRESENT RESULTS. WHEN THE ACTION STARTED IN THE PAST AND WE DON'T KNOW IF THERE WILL BE CHANGES IN THE FUTURE, WE USE THE PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS. ANOTHER USAGE OF THIS LAST TENSE IS WHEN WE REFER TO A REPETITIVE ACTION STARTED IN THE PAST WITHOUT ANY DETAIL ABOUT THE AMOUNT.
