The Unit shows how to teach pronunciation and phonology to non-native speakers. In the rise/fall intonation, the pitch would gradually rise and then lowers. This is a normal pattern of intonation in a statement where the speaker does not need immediate response. In the fall/rise intonation, the speaker asks a question to which he/she requires an answer. These intonations can be taught to students by asking them to speak nonsense words, making hand gestures for rise and fall of intonation, humming or singing to hear the stress and intonations or by marking the stress and intonations on the board. There can only be one stress in a word. The syllables can only be stressed, not the vowels or consonants. Most 2 syllable nouns and adjectives stresses on first syllable. Most 2 syllable verbs stresses on the last syllable. The lack of stress in any sentence or word means that the speaker is not interested. Stress can be taught to students through gestures, stress marks, board, choral work or contrastive stress.
