Teach English in Saling Nongchang - Jieyang Shi
This unit covered the topic of teaching special groups. Some of these types of classes are: beginners, individual students, children, business English (English for Specific Purposes, or ESP), and monolingual/multilingual. There are a variety of \"beginner\" types. Absolute beginners don't know any English whatsoever. False beginners are students who may have studied English, or been exposed to it in the past, but have forgotten most or all of it. Adult beginners are usually highly motivated, being more mature, and having decided on their own to learn English. Young beginners will often lack motivation, as they often were not the ones who decided they would study English. That being said, they tend to learn very quickly. Finally, beginners without Roman alphabet need a lot of initial work on basic literacy skills. Much reading/writing practice will be required. Individual students will attend one-to-one lessons, and often are seeing to improve their business English, or general conversational skills. There will obviously be no classroom dynamics to draw upon, and group activities will be impossible, but these students are usually highly motivated and focused. Children can be the most rewarding to teach. They are motivated by their natural curiosity. They need a colorful, positive environment. Speak slowly, take advantage of repetition, avoid their native language, and reward them with stickers, etc. Business English students (and their teachers) will often benefit from taking a \"needs analysis\". This is a kind of written questionnaire, or simple chat, used to determine the goals/needs/expectations of the student, their own impression of their English level, etc. It's helpful to find out about the students' companies, but also keep the lessons general enough to apply to everyone. Multilingual classes (and their teachers) enjoy the benefit that the entire class can't communicate in a language other than English together.
