This unit covers the qualities that make up a good EFL teacher and a good learner. It looks at the personality and relationship qualities of a successful teacher such as a love f learning and knowledge of the subject material and fostering a good rapport with the students. We covered the qualities of a good learner which includes listening, experimenting, asking questions, accepting error correction, reflecting on ones own methods and processes of learning, and a desire to learn. We also looked at the many roles of the teacher which range from teacher centred teaching styles and learner centred learning styles. These styles make up the bulk of todays teaching style approaches. Some of the roles include, Model, manager, assessor, participant and facilitator. We also covered the ways in which Adult learners and young learners differ in motivation to learn and other qualities of the learning experience in the classroom such as behaviour and experience. Lastly we reviewed the different levels of breaking down the level of each learner so as to appropriately assess their abilities. These levels include beginner, elementary, low-intermediate, intermediate, high-intermediate and advanced. These levels may differ in classification based on what country you're teaching in, but it is helpful to be aware of how the level of your students breakdown so you can design lessons and activities for the appropriate learning level your students are at. The many roles of the teacher can impact a students ability to learn and motivation to learn. Motivation is a key aspect to learning a new language no matter what age the student may be. Being an effective teacher hinges on how the teacher chooses to foster a caring environment for the students and how the teacher chooses to motivate them. It is also the teachers duty to help the students to develop a sense of responsibility for their own learning and create their own motivation particularly for young learners.
