This unit covered various aspects of classroom management. In order to control and successfully manage a class, a variety of different strategies can be used. Eye contact can be utilized to signal various directions to students, as well as to gain the attention of misbehaving students. Gestures can be used to help clarify what is being said. Varied usage of one?s voice is also a powerful tool to consider. Depending on the size of the class, a teacher should be able to vary the volume of their voice. A loud or quiet voice may also be used to indicate to the students the type of atmosphere that you wish to create for the lesson. Grouping students in pairs or larger groups can be useful for certain activities and lessons. However, there are pros and cons to each type of group. For example, smaller groups may allow for each student to talk for a longer period of time, however, this may result in more outgoing students dominating the conversation. Depending on the specifics of the particular lesson, these pros and cons should be taken into consideration when determining how to split up the class. The specific arrangement of the classroom can be used to change the atmosphere of the class. A traditional setup, in which the desks are in rows, with the teacher front and center, is useful for teaching large classes. On the other hand, a horseshoe shaped setup can make the class seem more intimate, as the teacher assumes a less dominant role and students are able to make eye contact with one another. The number of students and available space will ultimately dictate the possible choices one can select from. To prevent problematic behavior, the teacher should be on time, organized, and fair. Treating the students with respect shows them that you care about them. Some issues may be out of the teacher?s hands, but being properly prepared for each class and establishing a positive relationship with the students is crucial to minimizing behavioral concerns.
