This was a very interesting unit, learning about all the different teaching aids there are available for teachers to use. Every classroom should have a board to use, whether it is a white/black board, or a Interactive white board (IWB). It is important for a teacher to know how a IWB works, and to have a back up plan ready should the system fail. Test the system before the lesson, to make sure everything is in good working order. Overhead projectors (OHT) can also be used in a lesson. It helps students to focus their attention. OHT`s can be prepared in advance and help the teacher avoid having his/her back to the students. The disadvantage of a overhead projector is that there is not always space in the classroom, so that should be considered. There are many different types of visual aids that can be used. They illustrate meaning more quickly and effectively than through verbal explanation, they can add variety and interest, help with memory process, they stimulate discussion and elicit language. The teacher can use worksheets or work cards, to make cards for communication activities, they can be used for reading and grammar exercises, presenting new vocabulary. The teacher can make use of cassette recorders, cd players, and or videos/dvd`s. Keep in mind though that videos should have some purpose or task. A video camera can be very useful. Students can be recorded during an activity, and then played back to them for analysis and discussion. The students can even record a film as part of an activity or project. Of course dictionaries are the most important tools available. A good dictionary can help students look up meaning, pronunciation and usage, but should also help produce language. There are thousands of resource books available for teachers to use, and get ideas and activities from. There are a lot of online sources as well, so therefore the teacher can have a lot of fun finding and adapting creative ideas and materials for the students to work with.
