Unit 12 on Teaching productive skills provided an elaborated introduction to the productive skills: Speaking and Writing, as well as the difference between Accuracy and Fluency activities and how they are both equally important in the reproduction of language and language flow when communicating in the classroom. For example, (as mentioned in the lesson) Accuracy based activities such as drilling and prompting where the language is controlled by the teacher, will provide a safe environment for students to practice pronunciation as if ever one of them makes a mistake it will not be apparent to other students, because they will repeat the sentences as a ?group? and not individually thus boost students confidence in practicing the language. In the case of Fluency based activities, such as free role plays, discussions, debates, communication games and information gaps, these activities will promote student creativity when experimenting the language and allow their language practice to flow. I also appreciated the ideas of activities recommend in this unit, that encourages interaction and encourages students to speak, such as creative speaking/writing activities, pair/group work, plenty of controlled and guided practice before fluency activities, making speaking activities purposeful, changing the classroom dynamics if necessary and most importantly carefully plan every classroom activity in advance. The creative speaking and writing activities lesson examples provided in Unit 12, with the weather forecast activity for speaking and using pictures from a newspaper without text for writing, are very helpful in illustrating a real life example of how a lesson could be planned and what would be the learner?s objectives at the end, in each situation. The examples of games to practice in the classroom and Wikipedia links provided in this unit were also a good reference, as they provided a variety of fun language games to use in future lesson planning.
