Unit 9 ? Lesson planning A concise overview of the 9th unit: ? Should we plan lessons? ? How should the lesson plan be written down? ? Being organized ? What should be included in the lesson plan? ? Monitoring your lessons ? Planning a sequence of lessons 1. Should we plan lessons?: The writing of lesson plans has a number of important functions: ? An aid to planning ? what you expect the students to achieve ? A working document ? lesson plan helps you to keep on target, however it shouldn?t stop you from being flexible ? A record ? lesson plan acts as a record of what the class has done and which materials has been used 2. How should the lesson plan be written down?: Basic principles of lesson planning 3. Being organized 4. What should be included in the lesson plan? ? Learner objectives ? Personal aims ? Language point ? Teaching Aids ? Anticipated problems (for the students and the teacher) ? Procedure ? Phase ? Timing ? Interaction ? Class level ? Number of students ? Date/time ? Teacher?s and observer?s names 5. Monitoring your lessons: Self-evaluation form helps the teacher to improve the lessons by focusing on each lesson?s strengths and weaknesses. 6. Planning a sequence of lessons: ? Flexibility ? Goals ? Revision ? Variety and balance Certain conclusions can be drawn: Too much planning can make lessons rather rigid and stop the teacher being flexible to the needs of the students. However, it is very difficult for inexperienced teachers to be able to be as flexible as this would require. The teacher is expected to let the students decide what to do in the class. ?Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theater.? (Gail Goldwin) ?I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.? (Einstein)
