This unit was brief but important. I learnt what receptive skills are, being reading and listening, and what productive skills are, being speaking and writing. I learnt that there are ways to help learners with their receptive skills, such as picking content that is of interest to them and that in order to do this the teacher needs to get to know their students so that they can be aware of what their students are interested in. I learnt that there is a difference between authentic texts, which are not designed specifically for learning and that these are used for higher level learners to build confidence and get them to engage further with the language, and non-authentic texts which are created specifically for teaching at a specific level and that these are used when teaching the content initially. I learnt the different ways we read texts, such as predciting information from headlines, or scanning a larger text for a very specific piece of information and that these are used frequently and we must realise what kind of reading we are doing when teaching. The unit discussed ways of helping learners with their receptive skills, so that they are able to understand and use the information gleaned from the texts. One way of solving problems is pre teaching vocabulary that is likely to come up in the comprehension, and another is careful selection of the texts where the teacher should ensure that the texts are interesting as well as of the correct reading level for the learners, otherwise they will not be able to understand and will become demotivated. The unit also discussed examples of how to structure a lesson, and it was shown that using films, or interviews of famous people's lives is an effective way of gaining interest of learners and getting them to engage and understand the content. As part of an Activate activity it was shown that a good idea is to get students to write their own paragraphs on the biography of a famous person and then share it with the class.
