Teach English in Guangtai Zhen - Jieyang Shi
The unit introduces the four basic skills in English language; reading, listening, speaking and writing classified under receptive for reading and listening skills and productive for speaking and writing skills. The unit then examines the importance of these skills and also covers various techniques associated with them The unit implores the reasons for reading and listening; for a purpose or just for entertainment, to give a number of skills that can aid the different desires.Skills such as predictive skills, specific information skills, generel idea skills, detailed information skills and deduction from context skills can be used. The unit also identifies that problems of teaching and learning receptive skills are mainly connected with the language in the text, the topic and the tasks students will perform. As opposed to listening where students have no time to deduce meaning and think about the language, reading presents less problems as students? text is ?captured? on paper and students can re-read.Thus the unit gives suggestions on approaching language difficulties like; pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of text, choosing appropriate topics ( student interest related topics ), being able to generate students? interest and using task that will promote rather than check understanding. For clarification an outline of a typical receptive skills ( patchwork ESA ) lesson is used. From this unit I learnt that in teaching receptive skills, it is important to choose material that interests and motivates students, to build interest before reading and listening, to use variety of materials that will enable practising different skills and to choose realistic comprehension tasks that will aid rather than check understanding.I also take as note from the unit that interest to a topic is relative thus it is very important to be familiar with students? interest to facilitate choosing topics which will help in achieving learner objective as well as lesson objective.
