This unit did an excellent job of showing how to and not to communicate with students. The first video, the teacher's attitude made students feel intimidated, possibly stupid, but ultimately crushing their self esteem and desire to learn English. The ?everyone knows this ? it?s easy? that the teacher kept saying was harsh -- if they knew it, they wouldn't be there. If it was easy, they wouldn't have the look of being lost and confused. This video showed how to make your students fail. His disorganization only added to the confusion. The teacher was completely detached from his students in that he didn?t bother to find out their names, interact with them in a positive manner or bring good, light energy into the room to invite learning. This guy really didn?t want to be there and that in itself, would make the students not want to be there either. The second video was how teaching should be. The teacher engaged the students straightaway, asked names and made it a class. His energy invited them and made the student more open to learning, asking questions and having fun with with they were doing. The listing of the animals, he made it more a fun challenge and made students feel good about their accomplishments, and listing them on the board so everyone could see the different animals, kept them all involved and they were enjoying it. They asked questions and he welcomed them. He expanded their learning by asking what looks the same as a crocodile. Gave thinking questions ? described animals and birds and had them answer. He photos to further support learning and retaining the information. This teacher made students want to be involved and feel good about learning English. The attitude of the teacher in the second video is how teaching should be -- empowering learning, engaging the students, providing the tools they need to understand and have confidence, and make it exciting so they are less intimidated and more open to what is being taught.
