Teach English in Dongsheng Jiedao - Jieyang Shi
This unit covered troubleshooting of problems commonly experienced by teachers in the classroom. The first section covered tips for the first class. Most of this information was repeated from previous units, but it established the differences between new and existing groups. When dealing with existing groups you have the benefit of the student's all knowing each other and being comfortable. New groups will not only have to build a rapport with the teacher, but also between students. The next section focused on warmers and presented some ideas for class warm-up/Engage stage activities. The next section covered techniques for keeping a class of mixed levels balanced. Some techniques suggested splitting the class and giving them separate work or giving the advanced students additional work. Another approach would be to have the strong students pair with the weaker one to help lift them up. The final approach is to simply do nothing and allow the class to balance back out while avoiding losing weak students or boring strong ones. The next section was on teaching large classes and offered suggestions to focus on activities that involve total class participation such as choral drills, group work, and worksheets. Breaking the class into smaller groups can be beneficial, but requires the teacher to balance focus on each group effectively. The next section reiterated previously covered advice for avoiding the use of the student's native language and encouraging the use of English in the classroom. The final section focused on students that are reluctant to participate. It's best to provide these student's with safer and smaller practice environments. This can be achieved through pair/group work which minimizes the amount of students involved. An even more extreme option would be allowing the student to record things privately for review. A student might also feel more comfortable if they're role-playing or can make up the information instead of having to speak about themselves in front of the class.
