This unit covers the different groups of students that could be encountered as a teacher:- beginners, individuals, young learners, special purpose, business, multilingual/monolingual. Beginners encompass:- Absolute beginners - those with no knowledge at all of the English language; False beginners who may have been exposed to English as some stage but have little or no retention; Adults who will be generally highly motivated to learn; Youths - generally 16-18, who sometime lack motivation but will pick up the language quicker than their adult counterparts; Students who have no Roman alphabet and will require a great deal of reading and writing practice. INDIVIDUAL teaching where the course is specifically targeted to the students needs. This has its own challenges as there is no class stimulation or dynamics, the positive is that is only one level. YOUNG LEARNERS are enthusiastic and eager to learn new things - they are like sponges ready to absorb all new things, so although challenging can be very rewarding. SPECIAL PURPOSE and Business English can be individual, company based at the place or work or at the learning centre - where the team or department come to the school. MULTILINGUAL/MONOLINGUAL teaching in an English speaking country to students who residing there to teach English. Each group presents with its own specific needs and requires a different approach, eg young learners require lots of activities to hold her attention, simple tasks with lots of repetition and praise, Business English needs to be customised to there specific needs so a needs analysis would need to be carried to ascertain the requirements, this group can be challenging as generally the students would be in the work force, not necessarily attending voluntarily and may be tired after work, therefore less motivated. The re occurring message through this unit is that is important to: Always encourage and use English Speak slowly and clearly Make it interesting Be mindful of the culture, respectful, calm and patient.
