Teach English in Dongpu Nongchang - Jieyang Shi
Unit 3 so far is has been my most enjoyable one to study. They covered different approaches to teaching and introducing new information to students. I feel that the ideas they are presenting are more student centered then teacher centered, which I think is fantastic! As a long time student it came become dull, boring and uninformative if the instructor is the only one speaking and I am not applying the knowledge in any way. I suppose we might think of it as our brain shutting down. This has to be one of the best parts about being a teacher, engaging the students with interactive games, videos, role playing... I really appreciated all of the suggestions that were provided and this unit will most likely be something that i will refer back to during my TEFL career to also 'prompt' me for ideas. I might even use it as a quick reference while I am in my own beginning stages, until I have it down pat. Another point I really appreciated is informing teachers how over correction and certain types of correction can be destructive to a child and also the learning environment. Again, this is also something that I have witnessed and experienced as a student myself and would never want to make another student feel that way or develop a classroom culture where this kind of instructing is supported. I would like to have students feel that they are allowed to make mistakes, that is how we learn, discover ways to retrain them if they have developed 'errors' in certain areas and a space where every student is treated with dignity and respect. I was also thinking about the mention by some language programs that they provide their own materials for the TEFL instructors to use and so now I am curious as to if I would be able to incorporate some of the approaches mentioned in this lesson or if the language centers will have everything outlined for me and I will be following their strict guidelines. There might be a mix of both, especially if I am able to teach English in different countries abroad, which is my hope.
