Teach English in Chuanpu Zhen - Jieyang Shi
This unit discussed the various teaching aids that are usually available to teachers and was very useful in highlighting what each aid is used best for and what to be aware of when using the aids in lessons. Examples of teaching aids are overhead projectors, whiteboards, interactive whiteboards, video recorders and cassettes, tape recorders and cassettes, DVDs and computers. The unit described what to look out for when using the various aids, such as with a whiteboard one should plan what you are going to write on the whiteboard to effectively use the space and limit time spent with your back to the class. Also an example of what to look out for when using an interactive whiteboard is to use the correct pen, and that sometimes training is necessary to effectively make use of all that the system has to offer. The unit also gave examples of creative ways to use various aids, such as a video cassette. It was suggested that students could either make their own videos, using English, or they could pair up and one student could watch a video and then explain what was going on to another student who would then answer a comprehension. This seemed to me like an effective, interesting and creative way to get students involved and using language, as well as using both receptive and productive skills. The unit was furthermore helpful in showing a number of online tools and resources for teachers to use, and it showed that there are many resources available, such as youtube and online dictionaries and so forth to help teachers make lessons interesting and fun for learners so that they can learn more effectively. Additionally it was shown that computers can have multiple uses such as using word processors to create language as well as store resources for students that can be modified and reused at later stages, as well as email and video clips and carious EFL CDs that are widely available for use for teachers. This was very helpful in giving ideas of where to access and how to use the various teaching aids in a classroom.
