Many problems may arise in the classroom because of a lack of experience on part of the teacher, or because of the level of fluency among the students. First lessons should be carefully thought out and should not include work derived from the course book. It is better for the students and teacher to establish rapport between each other. This can be done through games such as pass the ball or a survey or questionnaire. The teacher needs to learn about his/her students in order to find out the level of English they possess, their needs and aspirations with English, and to design lessons around the interests of the students. Warmers are short and fun activities to motivate learners and get them speaking in English. These games often include Hangman, Pictionary, Tongue twisters, or memory games. One problem a teacher may face is a group of students with different levels of English. It is always best when in pair work to pair a weak student with a strong student. The teacher can also use different material with weaker and stronger learners and plan activities where the two different levels are divided into groups that practice the same topic, yet have work that is appropriate to their level of fluency. In larger classes, worksheets are ideal to guarantee that every student has participated. Group and pair wok is another good tactic to use and well as choral drilling. Use of native language from the students will always occur in the classroom and it should not be something that upsets the teacher. What the teacher should do is always respond in English, and make sure the explanations are clear and audible. Encouragement is always needed so the students feel they are doing well and do not feel embarrassed about making errors during their speech. When students are practicing listening comprehension, it is important to go over new vocabulary that is found in the recording. It is also a good idea for the teacher to repeat the listening so the students do not feel anxious about not having understood the entire conversation.
