Teach English in BeishAnnong Linchang - Jieyang Shi
Unit 19 focuses on how to teach special groups. This includes classes for beginners, individual students, children, ESP (English for Specific Purposes, such as Business English), monolingual and multilingual classes. These groups obviously require specialized teaching methods. \"Beginners\" come in many different categories, including young beginners, adult beginners, absolute beginners, \"false\" beginners, and beginners who have no knowledge of the Roman alphabet. When teaching beginners, it's very important not to try inundate them with too much knowledge. Constant encouragement and revision is needed. With individual students, it can be somewhat easier in the sense that there are no mixed levels, students are generally very motivated, and their particular needs can be clearly defined and worked on. You will need to tailor the content of your teaching based on the specific needs of the individual student. While teaching children, it's important to be patient and encouraging. The child's self-confidence must be built up with frequent praise and encouragement, as this is an essential part of the language-growth process. Children also require lots of repetition, and frequent changes of activity. With Business English or ESP, the type of language needed is often in areas related to the workplace: presentations, introductions, work emails, proposals, telephone calls, etc. Teachers should try to get an idea of the students' levels, along with carrying out a needs analysis to pinpoint specific objectives. With monolingual classes, students tend to come from the same country, share the same native language, and are likely to have the same kind of difficulties with learning English. Multilingual classes are composed of students from different nationalities, and they generally have no common language except English. While teaching these classes, it's important for the teacher to avoid using the students' mother tongue languages in lieu of English. It's also helpful to begin with very structured tasks and activities.
