In this unit, teaching new language, I learned the importance for the students to learn correct vocabulary, grammar and functions. When teaching new language to the students it is very important that they are exposed to it, understand the meaning and how its constructed and also have a chance to practice and produce it. Some lessons the teacher might choose to teach all three, vocabulary, grammar and functions however more often than not its normal for a teacher to focus on just one area in a lesson. When teaching a vocabulary oriented lesson it is most difficult to choose the new vocabulary you would like to teach to the class. When choosing it is useful to consider how frequently will the students need/use the words and also if its appropriate for the task at hand. When teaching new vocabulary you will need to teach more than just the meaning of the word. It is also important for the student to know when to use the word, how it interacts with other words, where in a sentence it belongs as well as how to spell and pronounce it. Without knowing all these details the student will have a harder time trying to use the word again therefore they could easily for the word. When teaching grammar to the students, structures you choose to teach the students will mainly depend on the level of the students. However just like when teaching vocabulary, it is very important for you to teach the meaning of the language, how and when its used and the pronunciation of the new words as well as the spelling of them. Language functions, also an important part to language learning, is the language we use when engaging or interacting with others, such as inviting or agreeing. When teaching Language functions the activate stage part of the lesson is an important stage, for one of the best ways to learning functions is to use it in real life situations. All three parts, vocabulary, grammar and functions play very important roles in a language therefore its best to try and find a balance of teaching all three subjects throughout the course.
