Unit 3 covered level testing, needs analysis, limiting factors, syllabus design, and assessment of students/examinations. Level testing is used to evaluate the level of the student's language ability. According to the Common European Framework (CEF) there are five levels: 1. Starter, 2. Elementary, 3. Pre-Intermediate, 4. Intermediate, and 5. Upper-Intermediate. A needs analysis is different from the placement test. It is given after the placement test and is used to find out the students' previous learning experiences, what their goals are/what they will use English for (job/study), and what areas they think will be advantageous to learn during the course. For younger students, the class might focus more on the class rules and teacher expectations rather than the syllabus. Whereas, for older students there can be more class discussion and focus on the areas of desired learning. Limitations might include: A. Employer and what materials you must/are allowed and not allowed to use, B. Time constraints, C. Resources (available: such as projector, photocopier, etc.), D. Cultural issues (norms and taboos), and E. Students (their levels and preferred teaching style). There are various types of syllabus: 1. Structural (based on grammar), 2. Functional-notional (communicative), 3. Learner-led (students can help design), and 4. Situational (based on different situations and scenarios). The first lesson should always be focused on building rapport and getting to know each other. The syllabus should also take into account progress test(s), number of language points, achievement test (at the end of the course) and a revision lesson (towards the end of the course). Types of assessments are: diagnostic, placement, aptitude, achievement, proficiency, and progress. Each test has a different purpose. Lastly, tests should be marked soon after they are all handed in, returned to students ASAP, and the weaknesses and most common mistakes should be gone over as a class. Overall, unit 3 covered a lot of important concepts regarding course development and assessment.
