Teach English in Huicheng Jiedaoban - Jiangmen Shi
This unit is a lot of information to take in in one unit. So many things to learn and I must say learn well to be able to teach pronunciation with confidence. I am already teaching and my family are American immigrants and so I grew up speaking English without really analyzing the words in detail. This unit made me think and reflect, and repeat words and sentences several times to hear the difference in the rise and fall of speech and end up saying out loud \"it's true!\" I had fun reading the sentences and hearing my intonation and comparing it to the ones in the unit. It is true that there are so many ways to say a word, depending on what and how you want to say it, which makes it complicated but the techniques in teaching intonation like nonsense words, humming and singing, hand gesture (I imagine it like an orchestra conductor) and using the board can NEVER be boring to students! The same goes with teaching stress such as contrastive stress, choral work, hand gesture, stress marks and the board. I can just picture the sounds that will come out and the laughter of the students doing these activities. I live in Italy and teach Italian children and older children have problems pronouncing (h) but can still be corrected and easy to teach to preschoolers. I believe in what is said in this unit as intonation, stress and pronunciation can affect the quality and accuracy of the speaker. Learning to teach it in the right manner is an important tool for any teacher. As for teaching the phonemic symbols, just reading and translating the phonetic script is learning the fun way in itself. I laughed so hard when I realized that I was translating a script from Yogi the bear. Giving the same exercises will be fun for students as well. In teaching techniques for individual sounds, tongue twisters have always been my favorite. And I use my own mouth to show how words are pronounced often. Peer dictation, visuals and phonemes for difficult sounds are also excellent ways to teach pronunciation. I learned so much from this unit. And I am thankful for that.
