Teach English in Huanshi Jiedao - Jiangmen Shi
There are many approaches to teaching English to English learners. Some of these include the Grammar- Translation method, the Presentation, Practice and Production method and the Audio Lingualism method, among others. These many methods have good points and drawbacks to their approaches. The approach that is promoted in this Unit is the Engage, Study, and Activate Method. The Engage stage of this method (ESA) focuses on capturing the attention of the students and motivating them to want to learn English and especially to speak/practice English in a fun learning situation. Alternating types of engaging tools is urged. Attention should be primarily on speaking through fun activities and not on correction of mistakes. The Study Stage is when the grammar points, vocabulary building, sentence structure, and so forth, can be introduced. First, the teacher elicits information from the students as an introduction to the study lesson, which also helps the teacher know what the students already know. The study lesson is taught, often using fun activities, such as wordsearch, hangman, gapfill or crosswords. Correction and feedback is important in this stage to make sure that the students are understanding the lesson, but an emphasis should be made on the positive aspects of feedback so the students are encouraged. The third stage of ESA is the Activate stage. In this stage, activities are done by the students which encourage creativity and discovery of the language, and student participation is required. Arriving at more fluency is emphasized over correctness, but after the activity is finished, feedback from the teacher can be helpful again, as long as it is more positive. The structure of the Lesson plan does not always have to be Engage, Study, then Activate, which is the straight arrow lesson structure. Other structures can be used, such as the \"Boomerang\" structure or the \"Patchwork\" structure, as long as an Engage stage is first and an Activate stage is the last stage of the lesson plan, other stages can be introduced again in any order between.
