Teach English in Hengpo Zhen - Jiangmen Shi
In this final unit, it pointed out some common problem situations that teachers will encounter in the classroom and also suggested ways of dealing with them. I have learned that as a new teacher, we will be faced with meeting a number of new classes for the first time. First, we have to establish rapport with the students and set the tone for the rest of the course. There are two categories of classes: New class(the students don't know each other) and Existing class(the students are likely to know each other and be comfortable with each other). To start our class, most of the techers do warmers. It's usually short, fun, communicative activities designed to get the students motivated. For a class where the students are at different levels, we can deal with it by using different materials or same materials but different tasks, or pair stronger students with weaker ones. With large classes, it is hard to get all the students get involved with the discussion. There's a few ways that we can do to create a successful classes: use worksheets, pair or group work, choral repitition and so on. We will also encounter that the use of the student's native language can be problematic in monolingual classes. To avoid the usage of their mother tounge, make sure the activities are at appropriate level, your explanations are clear to all class members, encourage the use of English where appropriate(not meaning that we will totally not let them use thier native language but they can use sometimes), and only respond to English. Most teachers will come across to reluctant students too or students who don't seem to want to participate or talk in the class. In this situation, we can do plenty of pair work so they'll be forced to participate, also controlled practice and role-plays can help. I have enjoyed the ITTT course. It helped me a lot to understand and consider many things on being a teacher or in teaching. I now have base on how I will start to teach others who are willing to learn English as their second language or for any purposes that they would want to use it. Thank you!
