Course books and lesson materials are a complicated topic. They can be split into two categories. The first is authentic materials, which is anything real and not specifically designed for learning or teaching. This makes them more interesting, and allows students to gain confidence by understanding them. Created materials is the second category, and are usually designed by the teacher. They are commonly used to replace or supplement the course book materials. Some examples of created materials include crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, and picture stories. Course books often contain several different materials. Including but not limited to a student's book, a workbook, cassettes, a teacher's book, and sometimes a video. Course books have advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages include that the students usually expect it, it is easier to supplement than to create a syllabus from scratch, it provides security for students and teachers, it offers continuity and progression. Some disadvantages include that it does not always fit the specific needs of a class, students may be reluctant to use the book if they do not like it, usage can become predictable and boring, it can make teachers lazy. There are four different ways to use a course book. The first is to omit certain lessons if they aren't relevant to the students. The second is to replace certain materials with similar but more appropriate materials. The third is to supplement materials to reinforce a language point or extend students' engagement. The four is to adapt existing coursebook materials in his or her own way and style. If a teacher is able to choose a course book for a class, it is important to analyze certain factors. These factors include the price, the availability, the design, the methodology, the skills, the difficulty, the syllabus, the topic, the teacher's guide, and any ancillary materials available. In conclusion, course book usage is a complicated topic and a teacher should take as much care as possible when choosing and supplementing one.
