I really liked the idea of a Needs Analysis. I feel this is the best way to have students tell the teachers what they are most interested in learning, when they normally could not. I experience this when I teach my piano students. I ask my students before I begin teaching, \"what are you most interested in? Are you interested in reading sheet music, playing for yourself, do you want to perform, do you want to write songs?\" And I think asking them at that moment stresses them out and creates a mental block. Before reading on beyond the Needs Analysis samples, I actually took time to create my own Needs Analysis for teaching piano. Instead of overwhelming my students with the questions I mentioned above, I have a list of ideas for them that include music genres, reasons for playing, etc. This allows the students to look at what they don't want to learn or play, so we can figure out what they do want to learn. There were a few other things I found very interesting in this unit. The concept of teaching approval stuck out to me. At times, I have a piano student who will play a certain note on the piano then look at me to see if they played the note correctly. I always thought that was strange, a student playing a note then looking at me to say something. I did not know they were looking for teaching approval. But this gives me the segue to teach my students about having confidence, which I am happy to teach my students. Also as I was reading through this unit, I began to remember things my old teachers would do. For example, this unit talked about having the teacher reading the tape script out loud if students have difficulty listening to the tapes. I remember my old Spanish teacher used to do this. The last idea I really liked in this chapter was the idea of using tailored teaching videos. I think this would be a very effective teaching tool because students can associate a certain phrase or word with a video. I did this when I was learning Japanese. I still remember the phrase \"Moshi Moshi\" because a character in a Japanese movie answered the phone with this phrase.
