Teach English in Didong Jiedao - Jiangmen Shi
The first thing I immediately noticed about the FIRST video is that the teacher was very intimidating and there was absolutely nothing on the board that displayed/illustrated all the complex ideas he was lecturing about. He also spent a lot of time writing down phrases on the board (squeakily) that could have easily been done beforehand as not to distract the students, which is a tip presented in a previous unit. I also felt like the teacher was going very fast paced--he was ignored the glazed over looks of his students and continuing to \"berate\" them for not knowing what auxiliary verbs were. He kept saying that \"modal auxiliary verbs are super easy\" and provided ZERO explanation or definition for it. This kind of teaching not only embarasses the student, but it also inhibits them from volunteering/answering questions in the future. The first video was very difficult to watch, but I have seen poor teaching styles similar in college (and they're not even teaching English). This first video also illustrates the importance of lesson planning and having a structured lesson that flows. In this first video seemed he to pace around a lot, scratching his head, and unable to answer a majority of the students' questions which is very unfortunate considering the fact that he is supposed to be the most knowledgeable. He didn't take the time to learn the student's names beforehand which really broke my heart! The second video was quite the contrast and it was refreshing to see the teacher (MARK) greet everyone with a smile and include the class by allowing them to return his greeting! He even took the time to get to know everyone's name before diving into the lesson too, which I think personalizes and makes the atmosphere much more comfortable and \"safe\" for learning. I also enjoy the way he engages the students by having them think of different animals so they are able to familiarize themselves in what is about to be taught. The way Mark exudes confidence in his teaching and how friendly and approachable he appears before his class is how I would like to teach. Great videos!
