As an English teacher there are different types of classes that I can face in my career, but mainly there will be beginners or student already at a certain English level. Beginners can be classified in: absolute beginners, false beginner, adult beginner, young beginner, and beginner without roman alphabet. This is obviously a not all inclusive as students can follow into multiple categories. Teaching to individual students has a lot of advantages like no mixed levels in the class and highly motivated student, but usually, in individual lessons, it is more difficult to keep concentration and dynamics. Teaching children may be very rewarding as they possess a lot of curiosity. Activities with children need to be kept short and vary them as much as possible. Keep lessons as visual as possible with lots of repetition and games. Frequent praise and positive encouragement is also essential to create a sense of self esteem of the young learner. When you teach business english or english for specific purposes, clients can vary immensely. You can teach one to one, in a company group or in a school group. The range of age and level of English can vary a lot within the group, plus student can not be really motivated, especially if the course is required by their company. The main problem is that students are often tired because they have been working all day, attendance is sometimes sporadic and you have to be aware of the dynamics of the group. So first you have to test your clients to get an idea of their English level and second submit them a need analysis questionnaire to identify specific objectives. In a multilingual class, students come from different countries, their common language is English so they are forced to comunicate each others in English. Usually this type of class is in an english speaking country so student are more exposed to the language. As teacher you need to be aware of their cultural background. In a monolingual class, students speak the same native tongue so it?s likely that they have the same cultural background and the same kind of difficulties with English.
