Teach English in Chaolian Jiedao - Jiangmen Shi
It is clear that there are many different strategies and methods for teaching English historically, and through the years these methods have evolved. Since talk time and practice for the student should be high, it seems that the method of ESA, or aiming to Engage students, help them learn how to Study the language and to help them Activate, is the way this course teaches how to lesson plan. Engaging the students, the first step, is an important step for the lesson because it can introduce the day's theme, or goal for the class to learn but also serves the purpose of helping the class be put at ease and set the stage for comfortable learning. This can be through a game, partner survey, whole class activities, something on the board that triggers responses, etc. This stage targets student-talk time and involvement. After this period, there is some flexibility, if you continue with an Activity and have an activate phase, or if you want to move straight into the Study phase where you look at the lesson's main point, through strategies such as worksheets, word fill, hangman, drilling, etc. This is also when the teacher will encourage self correction, or student correction or correct as the teacher, if needed. After this time is over, the class should end with the Activate phase. This is where through an activity that the students can produce. This phase stresses fluency and the usage of what they learned in this lesson but also collectively through their classes. The teacher should be looking to see if material was learned and is checking for comprehension that can be addressed in the next class. The teacher is not to interrupt the activity time of the students but just observe. The class can do activities such as role-play, making a brochure, doing surveys for more information about the topic, or even debates for more upper-intermediates. This ESA strategy helps me have an idea of how I would separate out the time I have in a lesson, how to set a goal/theme, and then strategies on how to convey that information in an engaging, interesting way for the students to use and absorb the language.
