There are a number of ways to assess a student?s language level: tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. At the start of a course students can get a placement test that allows to assist the formation of groups of students at the same level. Another type of tests ? diagnostic ? is used to tell the teacher and the students what they do and don?t know at the beginning of a course. Progress test allows to gauge what language has been remembered or acquired and what language has been forgotten. If the students are following a course leading to an external examination, they?re usually eager to do practice tests to get some idea how close they?re to the required standard, and also to be more familiar with the examination structure. An achievement test is usually an internal test given at the end of the course. External examinations are offered by Cambridge Assessment and proficiency tests are not course related but measure proficiency in English at particular levels such as The Common European Framework levels.
