First the unit covered different teaching methods, ending with ESA (Engage-Study-Activate). Then it discussed the ESA system in depth. First, class should begin with an Engaging warm up activity. This will get students interested and talking. Then we move into Study. There the specific language points can be focused upon. Finally, there is the Activate phase. In the Activate phase students use what they know and what they have learned to practice. This phase is more open because the goal is not mere drilling but fluency. The phases do not have to occur in this exact order every time, but classes should start with Engage and end with Activate.
