Unit 7 is about teaching new language. Its main concerns deals with teaching vocabulary, teaching grammatical structures, and teaching language function. In each of these areas, an example lesson is included that is relevant to what is being taught. First, teaching new vocabulary to students is discussed. It is clear that deciding which vocabulary words to introduce at which level is something that is not agreed upon among teachers. When choosing vocabulary to introduce, consideration must be given to the appropriateness of the words to the students, to their usefulness to the student (function), how easy or difficult the words are to teach at the level of the students, etc. The lesson must make sure that the meaning, the spelling, the pronunciation, the usage, and how the word is used in a sentence can be conveyed to the students. Some techniques are suggested to achieve these ends. A typical straight arrow ESA lesson plan is then introduced as an example. Next, teaching grammatical structures is explained. It is important that a student be taught the meaning, how and when the structures are used, forms and patterns that one can find when these grammatical structures are used, and the differences between the written language and the spoken language. Again, techniques are given to inspire ideas in forming the engage stages, the study stages and the activate stages of a typical lesson. As an example, an ESA patchwork structure lesson is given. Lastly, a section is given on the teaching of language function. Language function is using language to facilitate certain purposes, such as inviting, discussing, refusing, debating, suggesting, and so forth. In this section, an example lesson is given that is a typical ESA boomerang structure lesson plan. It is noted that the examples in this section are only examples to follow for inspiration in lesson planning, not the only way that it must be done. A lot of leeway is given for individual creativity and personal preference to achieve the end result, which is to teach the students in a positive, motivating way to learn the English language.
