Teach English in Shuikou Jiedao - Huizhou Shi
Unit 5 (incl.5a additional material) gave a detailed picture o facroscopic techniques which can be applied to many contexts. It was splitted into 7 sections: 1) songs, chants and music; 2) games; 3) stories; 4) arts & crafts; 5) seasonal activities; 6) drama & movement, and 7) sample lesson plans. 1) Songs, chants and music is a very effective memorization technique and much fun. A teacher should listen to them in detail to avoid unpleasant surprises. This type of activity develops both brain hemispheres, if actions are added. Younger learners like strong rhymes andactions as aid. Older young learners are embarrassed, if asked to move. It is recommendable one should use karaoke versions and copy lyrics beforehand. Better not to overdo. 2) Almost all outside games can be adapted for teaching. You can't play with older students all times...But use Hangman, Monopoly, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, for instance. 3) Stories are an excellent tool for vocabulary learning, they can suit any level or age, they are uite motivating; 4 skills are developed. Don't try to cover too much vocabulary in one go. Pearson English Graded Readers and dolphin Readers were mentioned here. Learning activities may include discussions, book reviews, own experience relatig to a story, collecting new information about a theme, reading related articles, etc. 4) Arts and Crafts are a vehicle for language use + great fun. Speaking, writing, reading and listening can be aimed at. E.g.: tell me about the monster you've drawn... 5) Seasonal activities are specific depending on a country you teach in. X-mas, Easter, Halloween, St.Valentine's Day, Fathers / Mothers Day are among them as an example. Here creating artwork, reading about origins, creative writing on the themes or poetry could be used. 6) Drama and movement make a distinction between different levels or ages of learners. Younger learners prefer more mimes and movement, whereas older ones are more interested in role-playing. 7) Many paragraphs were devoted to development of lesson plans. A useful supplementary material was attached, which I am thankful for.
