Unit 15 covered the topic of Evaluation and Testing. Of course, in teaching, it is important to evaluate students' progress throughout their learning experience. Besides evaluating student progress through homework, observation, quizzes, course unit tests, end of year tests, this unit identified specific tests that are given to TESOL students that are recognized world-wide. There are five main types of tests used in relationship to TESOL/TEFL. The five tests are Placement Tests (used to determine the level of class where a student should be placed); Diagnostic Tests (used to determine students' current strengths and weaknesses, a valuable test for the teacher in planning curriculum); Progress Tests (tests to show that learning is taking/has taken place. These tests are useful in showing the teacher areas where students are struggling and may need extra help); Practice Tests (used to help students practice for internal and external exams); and Proficiency Tests. Proficiency Tests are most often given as External tests and are used as entry requirements for schooling, jobs, etc. There are three main categories of Proficiency tests: 1. General English Tests, 2. Business English tests, and 3. Academic English tests. The most well-known of the General English tests are the Cambridge Suite tests, which are divided into 5 different levels of English proficiency. The most well-known Business English tests are the TOEIC, the Cambridge BEC, and the BULATS. These tests may help determine if a person will be hired or promoted in a job. The best known Academic English tests are the TOEFL and the IELTS. These particular tests are often used by universities to determine if a student from different country has a sufficient level of English to enter into a normal academic program. It is important for a teacher to know if they are preparing students to take these tests. This unit provided for me important information about testing. It was especially helpful in identifying the names of the specific tests that are recognized world-wide for students learning English as a second language. I found this unit to be very helpful.
