Teach English in Qiaoxi Jiedao - Huizhou Shi
In this unit I learned about the qualities and roles of good teachers and about the qualities and motivations of good learners. Good teachers: are kind and patient, love teaching, are lively and entertaining, are able to motivate and involve their students, have a good grasp of the subject matter, are able to correct students without causing offense, and have good rapport and interaction with students in the classroom. Good learners: are willing to listen to the language, desire to learn, experiment with the language, can take correction, ask questions, and are able to think about their learning process and methods. Teachers have various roles, including: manager, organizer, prompter, facilitator, tutor, model, assessor, monitor, and participant. The teacher needs to play different roles at different times, depending on the situation. A good teacher will know which role is appropriate at any given time. Students have different levels of ability, ranging from Beginner, to Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and finally, Advanced. Each student will also likely have different motivations for learning English. It is important for the teacher to find out each student's level of ability and reason for studying in order to craft lesson plans that are suitable for that student. AS a teacher seeking to improve my skills, I have learned from this unit the importance of becoming aware of the various roles I must play in the classroom, and of making a conscious effort to improve in the roles where I am weak. I also want to become able to show the qualities of a good teacher listed in this unit--especially the quality of being a good model for the students. This, in my opinion, goes beyond merely showing them correct English. If, for example, I am also learning the students' native language, I should model to them the correct attitude of a learner--willingness to experiment, willingness to make mistakes and accept correction, etc. The clear outline of the abilities of students at the various levels found in this unit will also be helpful in initial assessments of new students.
