This unit covers the importance of lesson planning to help supplement or serve the teacher as they guide the students through a class. The point of lesson planning would be to assist the teacher not to restrict and confine the teacher. It is a framework and a reference that can be used during the lesson by the teacher and help remind them certain factors like activities, order and time limit. It also helps serve as a way to keep track of dates the class was on this topic to serve as a reference point looking forward or looking back. While each lesson plan can be changed and adapted, certain things that are good to be in a teachers mind and written down are, Learner and teacher objectives. These differ because one is what the teacher hopes the students get out of the class and can learn and the other is how the teacher can improve or get across to the students. In addition, size of the class and level can be noted. It is good to list materials or aids that are needed so you make sure you are organized. It is good to reference the language point that is being addressed in a succinct way. Also, the lesson plan should include the procedure and the phases (including the order of those phases) i.e. ESA. Here it is good to write out the type of activity that you will do at each interval for each phase and to estimate how long this activity will take or will be given. Plus a teacher can note if the Interaction is Teacher to Student, Student to Student, etc. It is with the timing and the planning that the teacher will need to be flexible and estimate the time needed for these activities. For example for an Engage activity of a group discussion about food. The teacher could direct some questions about food of the classes home countries and favorite foods etc. The time estimated for this could be 5 minutes because the class size is 5 people. But this could be adjusted if the teacher has the same level but a class of 12 students. They then may want to estimate a 10 minute conversation for all students to contribute. Also this would be an example of a T-S interaction. An activity phase could be a Student to Student survey for example.
