Teach English in Longfeng Jiedao - Huizhou Shi
In the first video, the teaching is so awful I was surprised that the students didn?t walk out of the class. The first mistake he makes is to say that something is ?very, very easy\". I assume this would make students feel stupid if they didn't understand right away. Secondly, he uses a term that the students haven?t heard before, and he doesn?t stop to explain it, even when they clearly have no idea what?s going on. He has a bad attitude for the entire class, blames the students, talks too fast, and uses unnecessarily big words. When he tries to elicit information from the students, they are reluctant. They seem discouraged, frustrated and scared. He keeps handing out exercises with very little discussion or explanation. He doesn?t use any visual aids to make sure everyone knows which animals they?re talking about. During the exercises, he just sits in the corner mumbling to himself, not checking if they need help. In the end he tells them to be creative without any inspiration or example. He seems completely uninterested in the students and teaching in general. The second video was much better. To start with, the teacher smiles, introduces himself, and tries to learn the names of the students. He begins the class with something fun and engaging instead of grammar. He talks more slowly and uses pictures to make sure that everyone knows the animals he?s going to use in the exercise later. Then he elicits the verbs from the students by miming. Before the exercises, the teacher explains exactly what the students are expected to do, with examples. Throughout the lesson, the students happily participate and seem to be enjoying themselves. I also noticed that he put the students in pairs for most of the class, which helped them feel confident enough to participate. He timed many of the exercises and then called on the students randomly so that they felt a little pressure to pay attention and try hard. It also made the whole class seem more fun and interesting. I was impressed by how much he was able to communicate just by using hand gestures. It really helped to clarify what he wanted from the students.
