A good teacher is kind, patient, enthusiastic, full of energy, inspiring, and knowledgeable. A good teacher has good classroom rapport, involves all students equally, doesn?t offend students, keeps students motivated, and knows their students? individual weaknesses. During the lesson a teacher can assume different roles. They may use any combination of: Manager: giving a lecture and controlling the direction the lesson takes directly. Organizer: arranging activities for the students Assessor: giving fair, consistent and constructive feedback Prompter: helping a student along through guidance to help them discover the answer rather than giving the answer Participant: acting more as a peer to learners, but making sure to be the centre of attention to keep the lesson on track. Tutor: giving individual attention Facilitator: devising activities Model: giving an example Monitor: observing the students in their learning process The teacher must assume these roles as needed. A good learner is willing to listen, experiment, enquire, develop, consider their progress, and learn. Different ages of students bring their own challenges. Teens the most difficult, younger students being more receptive to sound, and older or adult students being more set in their ways, but also having longer attention spans and more life experience to draw from. A teacher must be culturally sensitive, and aware of the language level of their students. The Common European framework breaks these down into levels corresponding with the students? language levels, listed from a beginner?s understanding to mastering its use: Breakthrough: beginner. Waystage: elementary Threshold: pre-intermediate Vantage: intermediate Effective operational proficiency: upper-intermediate Mastery: advanced The students have various motivations for learning the language. They may want to move to an English speaking country, interact better in business or social situations, or even just have an interest in languages. A teacher who is enthusiastic, sets a good example, and understands their students and their needs, is more likely to be effective in teaching their class.
