Teach English in JiAngbei Jiedao - Huizhou Shi
In this unit, we watched two demo lessons taught by the same teacher but one ineffectively and the other effectively. The first lesson was just awful. Besides having a bad attitude, the teacher did not properly engage with the students nor did he explain or put forth any effort for them to understand when they struggled answering. He spoke towards the whiteboard turning his back to the students quite often, did not encourage students, did not help during independent practice time and left students to themselves. By constantly telling them ?how easy? it was, he was both arrogant and dismissive. When students made mistakes, he didn?t give any explanations but merely gave the correct answer. In general, he seemed not ready for the lesson and had to stare too long at his papers as well. I don't know if there was any pictures on the worksheet he gave out, but the students didn?t know some of the animals that were discussed. He did not have good transitions or any good relationship with the students. For the activate phase, he did not give proper or sufficient directions. His explanation on can vs. could was incorrect and the fact that he crumbled the paper after the exercise was rather aggressive. Of course, he should have not read a book and should have been available for student questions and monitor their progress. The second lesson was much more successful. The teacher was smiling and speaking at a slower pace using gestures and mimics so that the students could understand him. He introduced himself and showed an interest in the students by learning their names in the beginning of the lesson. By counting down and giving clear directions, he also guided the students towards success. He used positive encouragement and feedback to motivate students. The three things that were missing in my opinion was the fact that he didn?t go to student groups while they were working to check on their individual progress, did not show the pictures of newly learned animal names more than once and only had one activate activity. Overall, the second lesson was structured towards student success from the beginning of the lesson until the very end.
